Xiaowen Zhou (周筱玟) is currently an M.A. student in the Department of East Asian Studies with a focus in Buddhist Studies. She received her B.A. in Translation from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. Her research interests include Chinese religions and intellectual history, ritual and materiality in Medieval Chinese Buddhism, and Buddhist translations.

This course will explore contemporary Japanese society by investigating its colorful, dynamic, and rich output of visual culture. More specifically, we will look at manga, cinematic anime, and items of material culture, illustrating how these examples of popular art teach us about the various aspects of life in Japan.
