Chenyu Yan (严辰予) is a PhD student in East Asian Studies, focusing on Popular Culture in China. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Applied English from Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in 2022, she completed her master’s degree in Culture and Society at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2023. Her research interests include Cultural Anthropology, Media Studies, and Feminist Affect Studies, with a particular emphasis on fandoms and fanfiction writing in mainland China. She is also interested in the study of children and youth in contemporary China. In everyday life, she enjoys reading, creative writing, and attending plays at the theatre as ways of recognizing and discovering herself.

This course will explore contemporary Japanese society by investigating its colorful, dynamic, and rich output of visual culture. More specifically, we will look at manga, cinematic anime, and items of material culture, illustrating how these examples of popular art teach us about the various aspects of life in Japan.
