Huiqi Zhang is currently a Ph.D. student in the Department of East Asian Studies. She received her BA in Chinese Language and Literature from Beijing Foreign Studies University, and a MA in Critical Asian Humanities from Duke University. With a particular interest in space, spatiality and architecture, her research interests include critical theory, urban studies, cultural studies, contemporary Chinese literature and cinema.

This course will explore contemporary Japanese society by investigating its colorful, dynamic, and rich output of visual culture. More specifically, we will look at manga, cinematic anime, and items of material culture, illustrating how these examples of popular art teach us about the various aspects of life in Japan.
