Dr. Jiang Wu recently received the Provost’s Author Support Fund ($1,100) from the Provost’s Office of the University of Arizona to help to defray the cost of indexing his new book forthcoming from Oxford University Press. This book, entitled “Leaving for the Rising Sun: Chinese Zen Master Yinyuan and the Authenticity Crisis in Early Modern East Asia,” tells the story of Chinese Zen master Yinyuan’s journey from China to Japan amid the turmoil of the Manchu conquest of China. Despite tremendous difficulties, he persuaded the Shogun to build for him a new monastery (Manpukuji) in Kyoto and founded his own tradition called Obaku. The research of the book has been funded by the Japan Foundation ($10,000 for short-term summer research in Japan) and the Chiang Chingkuo Foundation ($25,000 for course release).
