Learning another language and culture (Japanese in my case) opened the door for me to live and work abroad, broadening opportunities for my professional and personal development. While it is perfectly possible to live abroad without much knowledge of the local language/culture, possessing this knowledge exponentially increased my professional prospects and enabled me to engage with the local population on a deeper level. And it's much more fun to know what people are saying about you when they don't think you can understand them.
