The Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona offers programs leading to the Master of Arts (M.A.) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees with majors in East Asian Studies. Graduate training in East Asian Studies affords students important opportunities for careers in teaching, international business, international law, government and diplomatic service, and journalism.
Instruction is offered in a number of disciplines, including Chinese and Japanese culture, history, linguistics, literature, thought, women's studies, Asian humanities and religions, and Asian-American studies.
Concentrations for incoming graduate students changes from year to year, depending on faculty availability and other circumstances. Current possible concentrations are as follows:
- M.A. is offered for East Asian Studies
- M.A. and Ph.D. are offered for Chinese (Modern history, religion and thought, literature, and linguistics).
- M.A. and Ph.D. are offered for Japanese (Linguistics, literature, and religion).
Please note: Ph.D. students should communicate with their intended major advisor before applying, to make sure whether their specific research interests can be accommodated.
The International Application Deadline for Fall admission is January 15th.
For domestic (US citizen) applications, the application deadline is January 15th. Application review begins shortly after January 15th, and applications are only reviewed once. Missing materials could adversely affect your application.
