Keiko Shimizu is a MA student in the East Asian Department. She earned a BA in Japanese Studies and a MA in TESOL. Upon earning her MA degree, Keiko taught English at various institutions including universities, a college, high school, and an elementary school in Tokyo, Japan. She is now pursuing her second MA in Japanese Anthropology (of Education) . Her current research interests lie in "Kokusaika" (International Programs) and "Tabunka Kyouiku" (multicultural education).
This course will explore contemporary Japanese society by investigating its colorful, dynamic, and rich output of visual culture. More specifically, we will look at manga, cinematic anime, and items of material culture, illustrating how these examples of popular art teach us about the various aspects of life in Japan.
