My primary motivation for studying linguistics is how language is used. In particular, what form and meaning does a linguistic unit have, and why a language is the way it is? I am interested in these questions as they pertain to Mandarin Chinese, and I investigate them from the perspective of Cognitive Typology and Usage-based Construction Grammar. I am currently committed to using statistical analysis to examine the chunks that emerge in the learners of Chinese, but I intend to investigate more interesting topics either empirical or theoretical later in my doctoral study. My other research interests include corpus linguistics, lexical processing, spatial grammar, and sociolinguistics.
