My primary motivation for studying linguistics is how language is used. In particular, what form and meaning does a linguistic unit have, and why a language is the way it is? I am interested in these questions as they pertain to Mandarin Chinese, and I investigate them from the perspective of Cognitive Typology and Goldbergian Construction Grammar. I am currently committed to using corpus analysis to examine the constructions that emerge in the Chinese of L2 learners, but I intend to investigate more interesting topics—either empirical or theoretical—later in my doctoral study.
