My primary motivation for studying linguistics is how language is gradually shaped by usage through the investigation of both internal and external factors. In particular, what form and meaning does a linguistic unit have, and why a language is the way it is? I am interested in these questions as they pertain to Mandarin Chinese and dialects, and I examine them from the perspective of Cognitive Typology and Usage-based Construction Grammar. I am currently committed to using statistical analysis to examine the multiword or formulaic sequences that emerge in the learners of Chinese, but I intend to explore more interesting topics either empirical or theoretical, synchronic or diachronic, in my doctoral study. My other research interests include corpus linguistics, lexical processing, language change, lexical semantics, and second language socialization.
