Alexander Coulombe is currently an M.A. student majoring in Japanese Anthropology. He received his B.A. from University of Utah in 2012, majoring in Anthropology with a minor in Japanese. His research interests include Japanese right-wing groups and nationalism, popular and fringe music cultures, and religion. He hopes to continue his research after he completes his degree and eventually earn a PhD.
This course will explore contemporary Japanese society by investigating its colorful, dynamic, and rich output of visual culture. More specifically, we will look at manga, cinematic anime, and items of material culture, illustrating how these examples of popular art teach us about the various aspects of life in Japan.
