Every year, the Department of East Asian Studies and the Center for East Asian Studies host the East Asian Language and Culture Festival, a celebration of the vibrant cultures and traditions of East Asia. Each year, the EAS Festival features a wide range of fun activities and demonstrations, such as Chinese Costume Show, K-Pop Dance Cover Performances, and Japanese Tea Ceremony. We welcome students to come learn more about EAS majors and minors as well as study abroad opportunities in East Asia!

EAS Festival 2025: Purple Bamboo Ensemble

Purple Bamboo Ensemble

Joining the EAS Festival for the third time, The Purple Bamboo Ensemble is a performance and study ensemble at the University of Arizona; it is a mixed student and community group that sings and plays traditional Chinese instruments in the silk and bamboo tradition, as well as other musical styles from throughout Asia.

EAS Festival 2025: Tea Ceremony

Sakura Tea Circle

The Sakura Tea Circle presents the Japanese Tea Ceremony, also known as chado or chanoyu, a traditional way to appreciate tea. With the host preparing and presenting the matcha tea to the guest, it is also considered an art for this ceremonial and cultural activity. 

EAS Festival 2025: Calligraphy

Dr. Chia-lin Pao Tao

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful, decorative writing, focusing on the skillful design and execution of letters using tools like soft brushes and ink, with traditions spanning ancient China, Japan, and Korea. EAS Professor Emerita, Dr. Chia-lin Pao Tao will provide on-site demonstrations and instructions of Chinese calligraphy.

Departmental Groups

Chinese Language Program

The Chinese Language Program presents the traditional costume show, calligraphy practice, Chinese Go, and chopstick contest.


Japanese Language Program

The Japanese Language Program brings you the Yukata dressing experience, Kendama game, origami making, and writing your name cards in Japanese!


Korean Language Progam

The Korean Language Program prepares traditional Korean games, such as Tuho (a game of pitching arrows into a pot) and Yutnori (a traditional floor game).

EAS Advising Team

Our EAS Advising Team will provide information on EAS courses, majors and minors, study abroad, and scholarships. Come chat with us and play the spinning wheel—win yourself a prize!


Center for Buddhist Studies

The Center for Buddhist Studies will share their resources, events, and programs on the study and research of the Buddhist tradition.  


Student groups

  • The Vietnamese Student Association proudly presents the Lion Dance and looks forward to sharing their resources to celebrate the Vietnamese heritage and tradition.
  • Visit the Asian Pacific American Student Affairs (APASA) table to learn about their student activities, advising & tutoring opportunities, and much more!
